Panik(bread)

for 2 percussion, 2 pianos, and electronics
Natacha Diels 2012
Score Excerpt

This piece was written during John Cage's centennial, and offers a hats-off moment as its centerpiece. Written for Yarn/Wire and commissioned by S.E.M Ensemble, the piece is an explosion of virtuosity coupled with a lighthearted view on the mundanity of practice, ultimately resolving as many nights with musicians do- watching YouTube. This piece was premiered on the night Hurricane Sandy hit New York City.

Program Note :

panik (panic, German):
1.A fear which is so strong that one can think no more, and mostly just wants to run a way.
2. A primal emotion.

etymology: Greek, panikós
"pertaining to Pan," the god of woods and fields who was the source of mysterious sounds that caused contagious, groundless fear in herds and crowds, or in people in lonely spots.

bread:
1. sustenance, livelihood.
2. one of the oldest prepared foods- a symbol of simplicity and stability in many cultures.

panik(bread)
1. an absurd conflation of panic and stability; two simultaneous and equal thought processes.
2. a Greek bread and pastry shop.

Dedicated to Yarn/Wire
